Imagine stepping into our cozy, warm studio for a newborn session, filled with anticipation and a touch of nervous excitement. At Elizabeth Anne Photography, we believe that capturing these tender moments starts long before the camera clicks. To help you prepare for a session that feels as natural and beautiful as it will look, here’s a guide to getting ready for those precious first photos.

The Perfect Outfit: Comfort Meets Style

When it comes to what to wear, think of it as a chance to showcase your unique style while keeping things simple and comfortable. Choose outfits that make you feel beautiful and comfortable. Aim for coordinated outfits rather than matching ones. If you’re a fan of our classic black drop but have a paler complexion, try to steer clear of stark white clothing, as it can clash with the lighting and background.

For those adorable shots of you cradling your newborn, make sure to remove any chipped nail polish and trim your nails. A neat look helps keep the focus where it belongs—on the tender interaction between you and your baby. Consider bringing your clothes on a hanger to change into just before the session to avoid any wrinkles.

Keep in mind that the studio will be warm and cozy, around 24-27 degrees Celsius, to ensure your little one stays comfortable and sleepy. Opt for cool, breathable clothing for yourself to stay comfortable throughout the shoot. And, since we often focus on intimate shots of the top half of your body, bare feet or simple footwear will do just fine.

If you prefer to wear makeup, a natural style is perfect for the session. We recommend avoiding spray tans, as they can sometimes cast an uneven tint in photographs.

TIPS FOR A SLEEPY BABY: THE LITTLE DETAILS MATTER

To help keep your baby content and sleepy for their photo debut, consider these helpful tips:

  • Feed Before You Leave: If possible, give your little one a feed before heading to the studio.
  • Dress Conveniently: Choose warm, comfortable clothing for your baby that’s easy to remove without disturbing their sleep. Zip-up outfits are a great choice, as they won’t need to be pulled over their head.
  • Bring Familiar Items: A favorite blanket or other comforting items from home can help soothe your baby and make the session feel more familiar.
  • Extra Milk: Babies tend to burn extra calories during sessions, so pack additional formula or bottles of breast milk just in case.
  • For Breastfeeding Moms: About 24 hours before your session, try to avoid foods that can make your baby gassy, such as broccoli, cabbage, beans, cauliflower, garlic, or spicy dishes.
  • A Dummy Can Help: Bringing a dummy is extremely helpful for settling your baby into poses, though we do understand if you prefer to avoid using one.
  • Car Seat Convenience: Bring your baby inside in their car seat (if applicable). I’ll help transfer them from the seat to minimize handling and keep them nice and sleepy.
  • Pre-Session Bath: If possible, give your baby a bath before you leave home to ensure they’re fresh and relaxed for their photos.

BEFORE THE DAY OF THE SESSION: BABY STEPS

Once your baby arrives, there are a few things you can do to help prepare for your session:

  • Naked Time: Give your baby some time each day without clothes to get used to being undressed.
  • Tummy Time: Incorporate tummy time into your daily routine. This helps your baby get accustomed to being on their tummy, which can be useful during the session.
  • Back Time: Put your baby on their back a few times a day to get them used to being placed down, rather than constantly being held.
  • Hands: Gently play with and loosen your baby’s hands, as we often focus on their tiny fingers and hands during the shoot.

By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for your newborn session. But of course, we don't want you to stress or worry so please only do what you are able. Our aim is for you to be relaxed and comfortable! We’re excited to help you create beautiful memories that you’ll cherish forever!
